So, we decided to put together research to figure out how to change the Cricut blade and break it down how to make the Cricut blade last longer and save you enough time to buy a new one.

Does a Cricut Blade Go Dull?

A Cricut blade can become clogged for many reasons, some easy to fix and some a bit more difficult. These are the main reasons we will cover below.

The first way a blade can become dull is to use it on various materials. Different materials need an extra level of sharpness to be cut.

For example, fabric scissors shouldn’t be used on anything other than fabric because they need maximum sharpness to cut the fabric’s weave. Whereas the paper does not need that level as it is easy to pull the paper with hands.

Cricut blades are similar, so if you use paper on the blade and then try to use fabric, you might struggle after so long that the blade will become dull by paper standards, and the fabric will not be clean.

Another way that the Cricut blade can become dull is due to using it on the wrong material. Some blades are created for specific materials and projects.

The Cricut blade is getting dull due to stress. You can adjust the tension to be lighter or darker through settings.

If you’ve never touched your settings or changed them back, this could cause your Cricut blade to become dull.

How To Make Blades Last Longer

There are some ways you can make the life of your Cricut blade longer and faster. Cricut blades can be sensitive to cutting specific materials and dull quickly.

The first way to prolong the life of the Cricut blade is by cutting tin foil on the machine.

Load your mat with a sheet of tin foil and cut – keep in mind that you need to adjust the tension so as not to cut or cut your mat too deeply. Choose any design and let the blade slide through the tin foil.

The next way is not to sharpen and clean the Cricut blade; start by removing its housing along with the blade from your machine.

Then gently press the blade into a ball of tin foil. This help removes any residue fibers and glue and makes the blade sharper. Do this repeatedly about 30-50 times. Then put it back in the housing.

The ultimate way to make sure the life of the Cricut blade is to replace your blade with a specific material. Look at each blade if you’re using 2 or 3 main materials for projects.

One Cricut blade for paper and card, another for vinyl, and one for fabric. Color code each blade or mark, so you remember which is which. That way, the blades don’t dull or pick up any glue or fibers from other materials, which helps keep them sharp for longer.
